Hestia sighed, glancing back at her best mate. She hadn’t wanted to tell her because Gwen had just gotten back from Merlin knew where, and Hestia knew the last thing she needed was something else to worry about—plus, the accident had happened weeks ago. Gwen hadn’t been there for her during the accident, but that wasn’t her fault. “I was just being stupid,” she replied, trying to describe it to her friend. “I guess I just wanted to try something new, and no one else was volunteering, so I went. Don’t you dare blame it on yourself, alright?” Leaning back into the couch cushions, she tried to smile reassuringly. “I’m fine now. Sirius had to carry me to the infirmary, and Madam Pomfrey put me on about ten different potions,” Hestia tried to joke to ease the tension. “Seriously, Gwen, I’m fine. I’ll even promise you I’ll be more careful about quidditch in the future. Besides, you still haven’t told me your story.”

Gwen sat there for a moment staring at the drink in her hands intently, her eyes narrowed as she remained silent, pondering whether or not she should let it go. Finally, she breathed out and looked up at Hestia, offering her a small smile before nodding her head, grabbing the girl’s hand. “Right, of course. I won’t blame myself, s’long as you’re okay now, yeah?” she agreed, taking a sip of her butterbeer before looking at her friend once more. “You are okay, aren’t you? Course you are. Anyways, don’t you dare try that again without me in the future. I’ll murder you if you do,” she joked, nudging Hestia with a grin on her face. “Right. My story.” She let out a sigh and nodded, taking a rather long gulp of the drink before looking back at her best mate. “Well, basically… Mum and Dad were attempting to do some more complicated research on their theory, and a group of pureblood elitists found out and… Well, they decided to attack them,” the witch said hastily, running her fingers through her hair as she tried to remember everything. “So they became worried for my safety and pulled me out of school so we could be on the run, like we used to when I was a child. And we’ve basically spent the past two months travelling all over Europe in order to avoid any negative attention. Finally, they found a spot in Romania that they thought would be safe, so they decided to let me come back. We had a few rough spots, but we’re all fine. I’m fine, okay?” Gwen looked at Hestia and put on a smile, stressing the fact that despite everything, she was alright. “So don’t you worry. And I’m back now, for good.”

Hestia looked at Gwen again—her best mate was really back. Her eyes were shimmering slightly, with what looked like tears, happy tears, and the thought made Hestia smile to herself. She had other friends at Hogwarts, and she loved them all dearly, but Gwen was back! And the thought made her happier than she had been in some time, with no room leftover to worry over classes or her mum, or much of anything else. Hestia laughed, allowing Gwen to tug her to couch, and flopped down comfortably. Taking a butterbeer from her, she sighed. “Oh, I have great faith in your skills,” she teased, settling into the cushions. “Erm, the accident?” Hestia repeated, albeit a bit awkwardly. “It was a few weeks ago, no need for you to worry,” and at this Hestia waved her hand dismissively. “I… well, I was at practice and I volunteered to demonstrate the Wronski Feint, the one seekers are supposed to do. It was a rather steep dive… and my broom flipped over. I ended up with a concussion and some bruising,” she finished quickly.

Stretching out on the couch, Gwen let out a happy sigh before glancing back over at Hestia, still grinning contently as they lay there. The feeling was incredibly familiar, yet still strangely new, probably due to the fact that she had spent the last two months sleeping in random inns and a tent in hopes of avoiding the wizards chasing her parents. “Right, get on with it,” she commented playfully, nudging Hestia before leaning forward, listening intently. “Oh… Bloody hell, Hest, why would you try to do that?” she exclaimed, her tone one of surprise and confusion. Gwendolyn furrowed her brow, cracking her neck before looking at her again. “I mean, honestly, only a trained seeker can do that. If only I had been there, I would’ve shown it… Hell, now I feel like shit. Are you alright? How bad was the concussion?” she asked worriedly, resting an arm on the keeper’s shoulder as she stared at her.

She spotted the blonde one moment, and the next, so quickly she wasn’t sure how Gwen had managed it, her best mate was hugging her. Hestia laughed, hugging her back just as enthusiastically, a matching grin on her face. She pulled away to glance at Gwen, almost not being able to believe her best mate was in front of her eyes. Gwen really was away too long, she thought to herself. Aloud, Hestia remarked, still grinning, “Well, you’re all in one piece, thank Merlin. I missed you more than humanly possible, you know. So we’re going to catch up now, and I’ll help you with all your stuff later.”

Her eyes welled with tears of joy as they hugged, prompting the witch to fully accept the fact that she truly was back. Gwen smiled ecstatically at Hestia, surveying her as if she hadn’t seen her in a million years, which is exactly what it felt like. In fact, the idea of her being home once more seemed completely surreal to her, as she had been gone and away from society for so long that the blonde had just expected never to see her mates again. But here’s Hestia, and the rest are in the same castle as me, she thought happily, grinning once more. “You really think I’d come back all scarred up? Merlin, Hest, and here I thought you knew my skills a wee bit better,” she teased, nudging her best mate playfully before dragging her over to the couch. “Sounds like a plan to me. So, fill me in. What happened? What’s this accident I keep on hearing about?” she asked, grabbing two butterbeers and popping open on, taking a sip before looking at Hestia expectantly.

I’m back, Hogwarts.

mar-macdonald:

-laughs and pokes her lightly- You better not! I’ve been so busy scheduling your week. -dramatic sigh- Well, we are the most fun girls here. -laughs- I miss doing pranks with you. -looks at her and nods- Of course it’s been dull without you. If you leave again, I’ll make sure I’ll tie you so you can’t. -wriggles her eyebrows- You must teach me your secret to winning over the professors hearts.

I’m sure, practically everyone wants to talk to me because I’m so bloody popular. -laughs and rolls her eyes, flicking Mary’s arm- Of course we are. Us Gryffs do know how to have a wild time, don’t we? Remember that one pillow fight? Blimey, that was a blast. Good, tie me down and keep me from ever leaving you lot again so I don’t cry myself to sleep every bloody night. -sighs and makes a dramatic gesture- I shall. You look at them, and smile like this. A lot.

Hestia stretched, quickly throwing on a worn, comfortable jumper. Gwen was back. The thought made her more cheerful than she had been in weeks—Hogwarts was alright, of course, but she supposed she hadn’t known how much she missed her best mate until she had returned. Hestia knelt quickly, looking under her bed for her shoes. Finding a pair with a bit of difficulty, she snagged them with one hand and slipped them on. Despite the fact that Gwen had been gone for over a month, life had gone on. How messy the Gryffindor girls’ dorm was was indeed proof of that fact. Sighing, with happiness curling in the pit of her stomach, Hestia took one last look at the dorm and quickly walked downstairs to the common room.

Gwen had spent the day doing absolutely nothing but speaking to her professors and Dumbledore, attempting to work out a way for her to catch up on what she had missed in the close to two months she had been gone. It was a well known fact that the witch was an extremely hard worker, so it wasn’t as if it would be extremely hard for her to finish off the coursework she had missed, though it was still quite stressful. Also, they had to insure that she would be alright returning at all, considering the events of the past weeks involving her parents and numerous angry purebloods. However, after insisting multiple times that she was fine, the Gryffindor was finally able to leave in order to meet Hestia, lugging a heavy pile of textbooks while levitating a case of butterbeer. Mumbling the password to the Fat Lady, she watched as the portrait swung open to reveal the common room she knew and love, and after looking about for a moment, she spotted Hestia walking down the stairs. Throwing her stuff onto the couch by the fireplace, Gwen ran over and pulled her best mate into the tightest hug imaginable, a painfully large grin settled on her lips. “Hest! I’ve missed you so bloody much!”

I’m back, Hogwarts.

mar-macdonald:

-laughs- I’m your personal secretary aren’t I? -jokes and nudges her- Life would be boring without you. You’re just fun Gwen. -smiles- Of course, you often get the highest grade don’t you? -grins- Well, there is no need but if you would like to help, thank you.

Yes, yes you bloody well are. I won’t be abandoning the castle without my personal secretary again, mind you. -sticks out her tongue- Why thank you, mate, you’re pretty fun yourself, yeah? Was Hogwarts boring without me? I doubt it. -nods- Indeed I do, at least I try. Perhaps I use a smile here and there to try and win the favor of my professors, but shh don’t tell! I’d love to.
